Inspired by Tibetan Mandala paintings.
- Mandalas
From Berlin - This project was the original idea I wanted to work on in Berlin. These pieces are inspired by Tibetan mandalas in thangka and sand paintings, specifically those that are representations of the universe. In those works, there is a very formal geometric array involving symetrical lines, curves, and circles. Often the shapes are concentric.
Monks creating a sand mandala- There is also the theory that the entire universe is made of mandalas, no matter how small or large one looks. Through the lens, especially, is only a portion of what is before me-- and a portion of what? The site, the neighborhood, the city, etc.? Finally each shot is a portion of the universe and therefore a mandala.
In Berlin I captured those images that spoke to me directly, most of which have a very geometric and concentric aspect.
In some cases I present the original image. In others, such as the street and tee shirts, I include two images.
